Berlin Fashion Week finds its identity and celebrates contemporary fashion, cultural diversity, and creative abundance against historical backdrops.

Berlin, June 14, 2023 - From July 10th to 13th, 2023, Berlin Fashion Week presents a high-quality program of fashion shows, presentations, exhibitions, as well as innovative event formats and conferences in the city's iconic locations, shaping the future of the fashion industry.

Berlin Fashion Week July 2023: an extraordinary Momentum for Berlin

Berlin Fashion Week reflects Berlin as a hub of creativity, as well as business and exchange. The fashion industry has established itself as a significant economic factor and job generator, both in terms of direct value creation and as an essential part of the creative economy. The creative ecosystem, with its globally unique subcultures, influences all other industries. Berlin Fashion Week sees itself as a movement for creativity, freedom, and inclusion, based on the principles of creativity and cohesion. These values will take the international spotlight from July 10th to 13th, 2023, as Berlin once again becomes the creative showcase of the world.

Berlin: Subcultures, Movements, Trends

Berlin stands like no other metropolis for progressive (sub)cultural movements and trends. Fashion is part of it, just like art, design, and the globally unique club and music scene. The developments here are rapid and mutually influence the city, its people, and the economy. Berlin Fashion Week reflects these transformations and interconnections, focusing on relevant topics such as sustainability, inclusion, innovation, and talent promotion, while fostering dialogue about them. The physical gathering of designers, press, buyers, and creatives is essential for an industry that thrives on exchange, inspiration, and visibility.

Future-facing: talent promotion within Berlin Contemporary

In this season as well, the Fashion Council Germany, on behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises, conducted the Berlin Contemporary concept competition. An expert jury selected a total of 18 concepts from Berlin and national designers out of 77 applications, who will showcase their collections during Berlin Fashion Week. The lineup includes established labels such as ODEEH, Esther Perbandt, RIANNA + NINA, and William Fan, as well as emerging designers like Acceptance Letter Studio, Fassbender, Haderlump Atelier Berlin, LML Studio, Milk of Lime, Namilia, Olivia Ballard, Richert Beil, Sia Arnika, SF1OG, and the Ukrainian labels Bobkova, Litkovska, DZHUS, and PODYH.

Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises, explains: “Berlin Fashion Week is our showcase for the emerging Berlin fashion and textile industry. ‘Made in Berlin’ fashion is fresh, bold, and forward-looking, and with nearly 4,800 companies and 25,500 employees, it is a growing economic factor. We want to consciously develop Berlin Fashion Week into a stage for the visionary craftsmanship of designers from our city and around the world, thus setting international accents. I am particularly delighted that we can showcase Ukrainian talents and their collections in Berlin again. This is a matter of the heart for us and the creators of Berlin Fashion Week, demonstrating solidarity in action.

Old meets new: contemporary Fashion against historical Backdrops

Der Berliner Salon returns from Charlottenburg to the Kronprinzenpalais. The collective exhibition presents 44 talents from the fields of design and fashion to establish a new understanding of the artistic and creative aspirations of fashion, photography, and design. In addition to the official opening event, the concept includes a multi-day program composed of various salon events to present a curated selection of Germany’s most relevant creative talents and brands.

The showcase platform 2ewest presents fashion shows by selected Berlin Contemporary winners for the second time in July. For the first time, the shows will take place in the premises of the State Museums of Berlin as part of an official partnership. In addition to the Kronprinzenpalais, the fashion shows will be held in various satellite locations, including the Alte Nationalgalerie and the James-Simon-Galerie. This collaboration sheds light on the special synergy between architecture, art, and fashion in Berlin, offering a new perspective on the iconic urban cultural institutions in dialogue with the contemporary fashion industry.

The Time is now: united for the Future

In January 2023, designers Rebekka Ruetz, Danny Reinke, Marcel Ostertag, and Kilian Kerner joined forces to create a new concept for Fashion Week. In the July season as well, the four designers will showcase their latest collections under the joint roof of W.E4.FASHION DAY at the Verti Music Hall.

The project Studio2Retail carries the unique atmosphere of Fashion Week throughout the city. Fashion shows, events, and pop-ups take place all over Berlin, while stores offer special promotions and discounts. The initiative is implemented by the Fashion Council Germany e.V. on behalf of the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy, and Public Enterprises. In an official competition process, the expert jury selected the submitted concepts of Lou de Bètoly, Gate 194, Melagance for Christian Wijnants, Natascha von Hirschhausen, and Platte Berlin for this season.

The Neo.Fashion format takes place at the Alte Münze this time. Here, graduates from German and Ukrainian universities have the opportunity to present their collections and themselves to the industry, attracting attention.

Following its premiere in January, the BeyondFashionBerlin trade show returns to the Atelier Gardens, catering to brands and buyers for whom sustainability is not just a trend but a mindset. Transparency takes center stage here, with exhibiting labels being categorized into five sustainability-related categories.
